Why roughcast?

Harling is the traditional Scottish wall finish - and on older stone properties it's often the only finish that works long-term.

We do it the proper way, with the right mix for your wall and the right level of breathability.

Right mix for your wall

Lime or cement-based, depending on what your stonework actually needs.

Breathable finish

Old stone houses need to breathe. Wrong render traps damp inside.

Authentic traditional finish

Tight, hand-thrown harling that suits period properties.

Built to last

A properly harled wall lasts generations.

Common questions

Things homeowners ask

What's the difference between harling and roughcasting?+
Harling is the older traditional Scottish term - a hand-thrown wet dash. Roughcasting today usually means a machine- or hand-applied wet dash on more modern walls. We do both.
Do you use lime mixes?+
Yes, where the wall needs it. Lime harling is essential on many older stone properties to keep the wall breathable.
Can you colour-match repairs to existing roughcast?+
Yes. We mix on-site to match weathered roughcast as closely as possible. On older walls the patch is usually invisible within a couple of weeks of weathering.
Will it improve my home's insulation?+
Roughcasting adds a real protective and thermal layer to your walls - sealed against wind-driven rain and noticeably warmer inside.
How long does the job take?+
A typical semi-detached house takes 4–7 working days depending on weather and prep needed.
